The Shires 14mm French Silver Training Bit features a French link to encourage young horses to accept the bit. This bit avoids the nutcracker action that occurs with many snaffles. Rather than having two parts of the mouthpiece come together in a single joint that can easily press into the sensitive roof of your horse's mouth, this French link provides a smooth unison for both sides of the mouthpiece. This helps to avoid unnecessary pinching or pressure, which can help to keep a young horse comfortable. This bit features a narrower mouthpiece, making it harsher than the 18mm bit, but also leaving more room for the horse's tongue. The loose ring design gives the bit more flexibility than a standard D-ring, and the large bit rings help to teach the horse to yield to the bit's pressure. As a rider pulls on one rein, the bit is pulled toward that side of the horse's mouth. The bit ring on the other side presses against the horse's mouth, encouraging him to turn his head and give to the bit's pressure. The Shires 14mm French Silver Training Bit is a milder bit that is excellent for advanced beginning training. Its narrow port makes it a little harsher than a wider-port bit, but its French link design also helps to keep the horse comfortable. This is also a great step-up bit.
